 The principles of fashion design

1. Proportion and scale

2. Balance

3. Unity (harmony)

4. Rhythm

5. Emphasis

These are the five basic principles of fashion design.

Let’s understand in short brief:-

Proportion and scale–Proportion is the pleasing interrelationship between parts of a design. The various elements in the design should be scaled in size to fit its overall proportion.

balance–Balance is the visual weight in design. Based on a central dividing line, Balance makes the right and left sides of a garment appear to be equal. A garment must be balanced to be visually pleasing.

emphasis–Emphasis creates a center of interest in a garment. All other elements support it by echoing its design message. A focal point can emphasize the theme of the design.

rhythm–Rhythm leads the eye from one part of a design to another part, creating movement through repetition of pattern or color.

unity(harmony)--Unity, as the name says it, is the harmony between all the principles of fashion. Unity refers to the overall look of a garment. For example, take a blue skirt detailing like a pocket. Here unity would refer to the color, size, and detail which create a sense of harmony.

What does fashion means to history:-

Fashion started when humans began wearing clothes. These clothes were typically made from plants, animal skins, and bone. Before the mid-19th century, the division between haute couture and ready-to-wear did not exist. ... Most often, clothing was patterned, sewn, and tailored in the household. fashion is important because it represents our history and helps to tell the story of the world.

Fashion refers to the styles of clothing that are currently popular – ‘currently’ being relative. It is always evolving and changing and going back. Every style and trend in fashion keeps coming back at one time or the other. So a study of the evolution of history is very important for any fashion design student, the history of fashion is an important part.
