Mithila painting facts by INIFD Gandhinagar

 Mithila painting begins from Madhubani district of the Mithila region of Bihar and that’s why it’s called Madhubani painting too. Also, Mithila is a major center of marketing and making of this Art. Mithila Art is Historical Art from India. Now this Art is used not only in India but all over the world.

Tools: To make Mithila painting some tools are needed as follows- twigs, brushes, nib-pens, matchsticks, and natural dyes and pigments. Art made by some eye-catching geometrical 

patterns. 


 In India, Mithila Art is used on some occasions to glorify the event such as marriages, baby birth, festivals. It is created on freshly plastered mud walls or floors of huts. But  now to display 

this Art is done on canvas, paper, and clothes 






Color classified: Mithila painting contains nature and the Hindu mythological figures. And this is all made by vibrant colors. Some of Mithila paintings are just black and white. The color of all Mithila paintings are made of natural color and all the colors have specific ingredients



Yellow color: Turmeric or marigold flower used to make a yellow color. 


Green color:  Plant leaves are used to make dark green color and it has the original shine which will make Mithila painting more attractive. 


White color: rice powder is traditionally used to make white color and to make it more sticky on the surface, artists add some glue to it.



Red color: Rose flowers are used to make an extra bright red color. And some other red flowers are also used. 


Blue color: the flower called butterfly  blue pea is used to make the perfect shiny blue color. 






  In this 20’s era, this Mithila art was mostly used on clothes or to décor the walls.




Most  Mithila Art creators are ladies because they have perfection in their hands. We all should learn Mithila Art and feel proud to have this heritage Art in India.
